Abstract
1,152,728. Centrifugal pumps. SIEMAN & HINSCH m.b.H. Aug. 2, 1966 [Aug. 3, 1965], No.34601/66. Heading F1G. In a self-priming centrifugal pump with at least one full-admission stage and a priming stage lying outside the main impelling flow, the suction of air or gas from the pump is effected in the first half (viewed from the volute tongue in the direction of rotation) of the volute casing of a full-admission impeller. The pump shown comprises a fulladmission main stage having an impeller 1, primed by a partial-admission priming stage of the sidechannel or liquid-ring type having an impeller 2. Air or gas is withdrawn from the main stage via a bore 9 or 10 opening into the first half (viewed from the volute tongue in the direction of rotation) of the volute and leading (via external passages if necessary in the case of the bore 10) to the suction chamber 12 of the priming stage. Preferably, the priming stage discharges into the pump discharge pipe, i.e. beyond the flange 5 (and beyond the non-return valve, if provided). The tongue (11, Fig. 2 not shown) of the volute is extended downwardly so that the impeller 1 discharges into the lower part of the volute. The liquid seal then forming in the upper, downstream part of the volute and extending beyond the flange 5 and into the discharge pipe does not reach the points at which the bores 9 and 10 are located and therefore does not hinder the withdrawal of air or gas.
