Abstract
716,382. Centrifugal pumps. PULSOMETER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and WOODROW, J. S. Sept. 5, 1952 [Sept. 5, 1951], No. 20971/51. Class 110(1) In a submersible centrifugal pump having, a vertical shaft, the upper boundary of the inlet of the diffuser or discharge volute is lower than the upper boundary of the outlet ends of the impeller channels, and an aperture is provided in the upper wall bounding the impeller channels at or near the highest point thereof to permit the escape of gas or vapour from the liquid being pumped. The fuel pump shown is mounted at a flange 6 in the bottom of an aircraft fuel tank. Gas or vapour entrained in the fuel separates out within the impeller 15 and escapes through an annular aperture 1 into an annular channel 4 and thence through conduits 2 back into the tank. Stationary radial vanes 16 are provided to check the rotation of the fluid. To assist the separation of the gas or vapour, the cross-section of the diffuser passages 5 is made less than that of the impeller outlet, the upper boundary 5a of the diffuser inlet being below the upper boundary 15a of the impeller outlet, thereby increasing the retention time of the fuel in the impeller. In a modification, the pump is mounted inside the tank on a side wall thereof with the inlet eye of the impeller facing downwards. Annular escape apertures and the associated annular channels may be provided. both above and below the impeller.
