Abstract

1464027 Centrifugal pumps GORMANRUPP CO 30 Sept 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 42294/74 Heading F1C A self priming centrifugal pump comprises a spiral volute 20 with a priming opening 63 immediately upstream of a shoulder 65 which directs fluid, drawn by an impeller 26 into the volute through the priming opening, upwardly into the impeller. Fluid initially drawn into a suction chamber 17 via a check-valve 23 passes into the volute through an opening 46 and is propelled by impeller 26 into a separation chamber 18, discharging through an outlet 25. Some fluid circulates in chamber 18, passing through priming opening 63 and again into the impeller 26. Prior to starting, chamber 17 may contain air, the evacuation of which is facilitated by the fluid flowing through priming opening 63 impinging upon shoulder 65.
