Abstract

1364117 Centrifugal pumps BORG-WARNER CORP 10 Nov 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 52166/71 Heading F1C A multi-stage centrifugal pump comprises a divided housing 34, 36 defining an elongate chamber 60, on impeller assembly 78 comprising a plurality of impellers 80-90 on a shaft 46 which is rotatably mounted in the housing, and a plurality of interstage volute members 94-100 fitted around and between the impellers. Shaft 46 is rotatably mounted in bearing assemblies 48, 54 and the chamber 60 is closed by covers 66, 68 in which are mounted seal assemblies 74, 76. The impellers are arranged in two opposed sets 80, 82, 84 and 90, 88, 86 respectively to balance the axial thrusts on the shaft 46. Each of the impellers comprises two circular walls 160 joined by helical vanes (164) Fig. 4 (not shown) and is heat shrunk on to the shaft and retained by a ring 130 and key 132. Each of the volutes 94-100 is formed with a flange 180 for accommodation in an annular groove in the housing and comprises two complimentary segments (174, 176) Fig. 5 (not shown) and has portions which respectively radially surround the hub 158 of one impeller and the throat 166 of the next impeller. A stage divider 108 formed as two segments and provided with a flange to locate it in the housing separates the third impeller 84 from the sixth 86. Inlet 42 communicates with suction chamber 140, of the first impeller 80, which is formed by a guide member 92 provided with webs 136 to prevent swirling of liquid in the chamber. A seal baffle 106 defines with cover 66 a chamber 148 which is connected to chamber 140 by conduit 154 to equalise suction pressures on seals 74 and 76. Guide member 102 formed with webs 144 to prevent the fluid swirling defines with baffle 106 a suction chamber 146, of the fourth impeller 90, which is connected to the outlet of third stage impeller 84 by a conduit 122. An outlet 38 is connected to the sixth stage impeller unit 120. The impeller assembly 78 may be dynamically balanced for rotation prior to assembly of the pump.
