Abstract

1485815 Centrifugal pumps RULE INDUSTRIES Inc 3 Dec 1974 [3 Dec 1973] 52158/74 Heading F1C A submersible bilge pump comprises an impeller 101, Fig. 1, driven by a motor 102 enclosed in a watertight casing 100, the water being discharged to a discharge 70 via the annular space 52 between the casing and the pump housing 50, thereby cooling the motor. Air is vented through at least one hole 74 from a space 145 above the discharge 70 to an annular relief chamber 76 formed mainly in a lid 150. A Venturi throat 109 is stated to assist the venting. The water is drawn into the impeller chamber 62 via strainer slots 20 in an outer casing 10, Figs. 1 and 3, and an inlet 64. The outer casing 10 is square in cross-section but may instead be of other polygonal shape or circular, the lid 150 being of corresponding shape. The pump housing 50 and the motor casing 100 are of circular cross-section, an annular flange 134 on the casing 100 being stepped at 138 and 146 to engage correspondingly stepped edges on the housing 50 and on an annular inner wall 154 of the lid 150 and preferably being bonded to the wall 154. A flange 57 connected to the housing 50 by a web 56 nests around the upper part 34 of the outer casing. Barbs152 depending from the lid 150 pass through apertures in the web 56 and engage stirrups 36 on top of the outer casing 10 to lock the lid in place.
