Abstract

976,695. Hydraulic turbines and pumps. ATELIERS DES CHARMILLES S.A. Sept. 24, 1963 [Oct. 17, 1962; July 19, 1963], No. 37457/63. Headings F1C and F1T. A hydraulic installation comprising a turbine wheel and a pump wheel mounted in adjacent positions on the same shaft, a single casing being provided for feeding the turbine and receiving the water delivered by the pump, and means being provided for separating the internal space of the casing from the spaces in which the turbine and pump wheels rotate, is characterized in that a suction pipe of the turbine and a suction pipe of the pump are disposed coaxially on the same side of the wheels over at least a part of their length contiguous to the wheels. The hydro-electric installation shown comprises a turbine rotor 3 and a pump rotor 5, which may be integral with one another as shown, overhung on the shaft 1 of a dynamo-electric machine 2 and surrounded by a common spiral casing 14. When the machine 2 is acting as a generator, water from an upper reservoir (not shown) is fed to the casing 14 and passes through fixed inlet guide vanes 13 and adjustable-pitch stator blades 8 to drive the turbine rotor 3, being discharged through a suction pipe 17 to a lower reservoir 21. As shown, communication with the pump rotor 5 is cut off by an annular gate 23. At off-peak periods, gate 23 is opened and a similar gate 22 is closed to cut off communication with the turbine rotor 3. The machine 2 is then run as a motor to drive the pump rotor 5, which draws water from the lower reservoir 21 through a suction pipe 18 and discharges it through fixed diffuser vanes 16 to the casing 14 and thence to the upper reservoir. As shown, the suction pipe 18 is concentric with the suction pipe 17 over part of its length (or over its entire length, particularly in the case of an installation having a vertical shaft). The guide vanes 13 are curved to reverse the tangential component of flow, whereby the installation runs in the same direction of rotation during both modes of operation. Alternatively, the diffuser vanes 16 are curved for this purpose. The gate 22 may be omitted, its function then being performed by the adjustable stator blades 8. The common reservoir 21 may be replaced by separate reservoirs for the two suction pipes. The turbine and pump rotors (and their suction pipes) may be transposed.
