Abstract

1,132,117. Hydraulic turbines; axial-flow pumps. DOMINION ENG. WORKS, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1966 [March 3, 1965], No.7268/66. Headings F1C and F1T. A water turbine rotor 30 comprising axial-flow blading 31 is supplied with water from a lowpressure source via an axial-flow pump rotor 10 which increases the pressure to a valve suitable for operating the rotor 30. The rotor 10, which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 11 carried by the housing 3 of the electric generator driven by the rotor 30, comprises axial-flow pump blading 15 and turbine blading 13 separated by an annular shroud 14. The shroud 14, together with stationary annular shrouds 20, 33 carried by stationery vanes, 18, 19, 34, divides the water into an inner stream passing through the pump blading 15 and turbine blading 31, and an outer stream passing through the turbine blading 13 to drive the pump rotor 10. The pump may comprise a pair of contra-rotating rotors. The vanes 34 may be eliminated, the shroud 33 being replaced by an extension of the shroud 14 or by a shroud carried by the blading 31 (which then cannot be of adjustable type).
