Abstract

621,175. Turbines. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and ROESCH, G. H. Nov. 16, 1946, No. 34044. [Class 110(iii)] A multi-stage axial flow compressor, axial flow turbine or like fluid flow machine having successive stages of stator blades pivotally mounted for the adjustment of their stagger angle, has the stator blades pivotally supported in bearing mountings in axially successive annuli, the annuli of any two successive stator stages co-operating to form a shroud for the intervening rotor stage and constitute with the stator blades a continuous internal surface between the inlet and outlet of the machine. The rotatable stator blades 10, Fig. 1 are formed with a root pivot portion 11 having a flanged end 12 and a shoulder 13. The pivot portion 11 is rotatably mounted in a seating 15 constituted by semi-circular formations in the rings 16 and 17. The seating 15 has recesses at each end to accommodate the shoulder 13 and flanged end 12. The end 12 is provided with an integral actuating arm 14 and has flat faces 19, 19a, 20 and 20a, Fig. 2, which have only sufficient clearance in the slots 21 to allow of the required adjustment of the blades. The arms 14 of the blades engage an L-shaped actuating ring 25 mounted on roller bearings 27 in a similar shaped recess formed in the ring 17. The ring 25 is provided with a notch to receive a nut 29 operated by a screw 30 mounted in a casing 31 which encloses the rings 16, 17. The actuating screws 30 for the several stages may, if desired, be coupled together. The rings 16 and 17 may be secured together by screws passing between the blade seatings.
