Abstract

934,364. Axial-flow and helico-centrifugal pumps and compressors; turbines. SULZER FRERES S.A. Nov. 2, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 37718/60. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). In a multi-stage machine operable in a hydro-electric power station as a pump to deliver water to a high-level reservoir when surplus energy is being generated by an associated power plant and, during periods of heavy demand, operable as a turbine driven by water taken from the reservoir to drive an electric generator, at least the last stage of the machine (when considered as a pump) is provided with adjustable rotor blades 5. This permits the blades 5 to be adjusted for the most efficient operation of the machine as a pump or as a turbine. Adjustment is effected by a spindle 22 passing through a hollow rotor-shaft 11 and connected by bevel gearing 20 to the blades 5. The spindle 22, which may be provided with a hand wheel or a servomotor, is supported by bearings 23, 24. The shaft 13 of the lower rotor 14 is journalled in a water-lubricated rubberlined bearing 16. For pump operation, water enters at an inlet 2 and is discharged from a volute 6. For turbine operation, the direction of flow is reversed. The machine may be of axial-flow type and may handle gas or vapour instead of liquid. For example, the recuperation turbine of a compressor plant can operate as a compressor when required.
