762,406. Hydraulic turbines and pumps. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 20, 1955 [May 27, 1954], No. 15710/54. Class 110(3). In a mixed radial and axial flow hydraulic machine which by reversal of the direction of rotation can be used alternatively as a turbine or as a pump, and having adjustable rotor vanes 9 and fixed spiral-segment stay vanes 24, tiltable flaps 23 are hinged at the inner edges of the stay vanes 24. The stay vanes 24 act alternatively as pump diffusers or turbine guide vanes. For turbine operation under heads considerably lower than the design head, the flaps 23 are tilted so as to brake the peripheral velocity component of the water as it leaves the stay vanes 24. The flaps 23 are pivoted on axles 22 which carry arms 26 operated as by servomotors 27 or by a common ring. For pumping operation and for turbine operation under normal heads, the flaps 23 are aligned with the stay vanes 24. Each axle 22 may be arranged in the middle of its flap 23, or near the outer end of the flap or, as shown, near the inner end. The latter arrangement permits automatic operation of the flap by the water.
