Abstract

1446198 Magnetic couplings STANDARD MAGNET AG 28 Aug 1973 40486/73 Heading H2A In a magnetic coupling comprising two rotors 52, 53 one coaxially within the other with an air gap 56 therebetween, at least one rotor is a permanent magnet ring juxtaposed to whose permanent magnet poles is a coaxial annular array of soft Fe elements 58 so arranged for limited angular displacement relative to the rings about their axis that the flux shunting effect of the elements, and hence the torque that the coupling may transmit, is variable. In the embodiment shown the outer rotor 53 is a soft Fe rotor carrying squirrel cage conductor rods 60, and the inner rotor 52 comprises circumferentially magnetized permanent magnets 50 having interposed Fe segments 54, 54<SP>1</SP> serving as pole shoes. In other embodiments the inner rotor is a hysteresis rotor, the outer rotor is permanently magnetized, and the elements are disposed outside the outer rotor.
