Abstract
583,298. Bearings. HOOVER, Ltd. Oct. 17, 1944, Nos. 20037 and 20038. Convention dates, Oct. 21, 1943, and Dec. 31, 1943. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] An externally driven rotor operating in a sealed fluid-tight system such as the rotor of a circulating gas fan or liquid pump in an absorption refrigerating apparatus is wholly or partly supported by magnetic repulsion and is driven by a rotating magnetic field provided by a moving magnet system or generated by alternating currents. The rotor is also centralized by magnetic repulsion. A hermetically sealed casing 16 welded to the casing 10 of a fan has an outwardly flaring top portion 19 in which is arranged a disc 32 of magnetic material having an inclined peripheral edge. The disc is mounted on a permanent magnet 36 the lower end of which carries a number of pole pieces 40 to which are fixed the fan vanes 44. The fan is driven from an external shaft 20 through a magnetic coupling comprising permanent magnets 30 of like polarity orientation with the internal magnet 36 and depending from a ring 26 of magnetic material carried in a cup-like member 24 on the drive shaft 20, the poles at the lower end of these magnets 30 giving a repulsion drive to the pole pieces 40. The external ring 26 has an inclined section corresponding with the inclined edge of the internal disc 32 and the repulsion effect therefore has vertical and horizontal components, the vertical component taking up the weight of the fan assembly and the horizontal component centralizing the shaft in a stable manner. The internal fan assembly may have a cylindrical shell 45 to form a buoyancy chamber 16 into which inert gas is introduced thereby to take up part of the weight. The permanent magnets are of the materials known under the trade name "Alnico" an alloy of aluminium, nickel, iron and cobalt. The rotary drive may be effected by an induction motor arrangement comprising an external stator fed with alternating currents and an internal rotor, Fig. 3 (not shown), the rotor shaft being supported and centralized at each end by a pair of discs and rings for the two ends of each of the sets of like-orientated opposing permanent magnets which in this form are contained within the sealed casing.
