Abstract
557,631. Magnetic brakes. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). May 28, 1942, No. 7251. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XL] An X-ray tube having a rotatable anode is provided within the envelope with magnetic braking means for bringing the anode to rest when the drive ceases. The X-ray tube shown comprises an anode support or pedestal 17 extending into the glass extension 21 to which it is sealed at 29 by a member 25, 27. The anode 11 is attached to a cylindrical member 15 of steel carried by a spindle 37 mounted by roller bearings 33, 35 within a tubular part 19 of the support 17. The bearings are positioned by members 39, 41 and may be lubricated in the manner described in Specification 542,665, [Group II]. The braking device comprises a permanent magnet 43 secured in a slot in the support part 19 by transverse straps which also form pole pieces 47, 49 slightly spaced from the steel part 15 which completes the magnetic circuit. The skirt 31 of the anode is of cuprous material and with the steel part 15 constitute the rotor of a motor device by which the anode is driven, the stator being formed by annular windings disposed about the tube extension 21 and which when energised establish a rotating field. The co-operation of the magnet 43 with the part 15 produces a braking action which rapidly brings the anode to rest when the windings are de-energised.
