Abstract

578,075. Magnetic work holders. HITCHCOCK, S. I. Nov. 6, 1944, No. 21768. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic work-holder comprises one or more magnets, mounted about an axis perpendicular to its magnetic axis, and fixed lowreluctance armature members in contact with or near a work-supporting surface of spaced magnetic' and non-magnetic members lying parallel to the axis of rotation of the magnet; the armatures are so arranged in spaced rela,- tionship to the magnet's pole faces as to short circuit the magnetic flux when the magnet is in an inoperative position. The work-holder comprises a casing 1 of non-magnetic material and a work supporting surface 2 made up of a series of soft-iron members 7, separated by non- magnetic members 8, extending the length of the surface. The permanent magnets 3, each with a pair of arcuate soft iron pole-pieces 21, are mounted on a shaft 4 and are rotatable through 90 degrees by a handle 14. The laminated armature members 5, of a low reluctance, are of such length as to overlap the pole-pieces when the magnets are in an inoperative position. The pole-piece of the magnets may be of an oppositely tapering formation.
