949,262. Planar air gap machines having printed circuit windings. COMPAGNIE ELECTRO-MECANIQUE. Dec. 1, 1961 [Jan. 20, 1961], No. 43053/61. Heading H2A. An alternator having a planar airgap 15, 16 and variable reluctance comprises a field made up of at least one fixed element 8 and one moving element 13, 14 which revolves in a plane annular space between the fixed element and a fixed disc-shaped armature 7 having one or more flat windings of strip conductors 7a and without any iron. As shown, there are two fixed elements 8, each being an axially magnetized hard ferrite annular permanent magnet whose flax paths are completed through magnetic half-shells 5, 6 forming a casing. The movable elements each comprise soft magnetic teeth 14 screwed to a soft magnetic flux transfer ring 13 in turn screwed to a non-magnetic, e.g. aluminium alloy ring 9 keyed to a driven shaft 1; the two elements are selectively spaced apart, and the airgaps 15, 16 are determined, by the choice of thicknesses of distance-pieces 10 ... 12 and washers 17. The teeth 14 are uniformly spaced, equal in number in each element to that of the armature pole pairs, and are shaped to the dimensions of the conductors 7a, which latter may be single- or polyphase, concentrated or distributed, and comprise one or more circuits in parallel or series. Collars 19 which fit together the half-shells 5, 6 have slots 18 in which are contained external connection terminals 20.
