Abstract

673,649. Magnetic couplings; electromagnets. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1950 [Jan. 20, 1949], No. 1646/49. Class 35. A spirally-magnetized magnet 21 is rotated by variation of the effective axial extent of a stationary pole member 23. In the form shown, this effective variation is produced by grading the spacing of the polepiece from the magnet so that progressive increases of flux produced by the coil 23b or an adjustable permanent magnet cause the shaded portions of the poles to become saturated. Thus the mean flux position and therefore the angle of the magnet is altered. In an alternative form, the pole may be tapered or wedge-shaped and be mounted to extend and be adjustable tangentially of the cylinder to change the axial extent of the overlap between the pole and the rotating magnet. In a modification, a pair of mutually sliding wedge-shaped members may be used. The magnet may be in the form of a twisted strip instead of a cylinder as shown.
