Abstract

668,057. Permanent magnets. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 10, 1950 [July 4, 1950], No. 19918/50. Class 35. A unitary anisotropic permanent magnet unit has a series of poles whose length is great compared with their spacing, and the magnetic preferential direction of the entire body is parallel to the direction of the pole limbs. The invention is shown in a straight pole unit, e.g. for magnetic separators, but annular pole-members in which the poles are radial or axial, e.g. for cycle dynamos, are also described. The magnet body is hardened in the direction 11 between magnetic poles 9, 10. It is stated that although the flux 3 in the transverse connection between the poles is at right angles to the magnetic preferential direction, the reluctance is not substantial, probably due to flux scatter, as shown at 12. The connecting yoke part is made thicker than is theoretically necessary such that the excess material used is not greater than 30 per cent of the volume of a pair of poles. Final magnetization is effected by turns of wire round the individual poles.
