998,237. Magnetic separation. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION., Jan. 16, 1964 [Jan. 28, 1963], No. 1992/64. Heading B2J. [Also in Division H1] A permanent magnet assembly comprises a soft magnetic elongated trough-shaped yoke 50 having two sides defining two pole faces at a working face, an elongated central polepiece 48 extending parallel to and disposed within the yoke in fixed spaced relation thereto to define a third pole face at the working face, and at least two permanent magnets 41-44 substantially filling the space between the yoke, polepiece and working face, the arrangement and magnetization directions of the magnets being such that the magnets converge their one polarity on the polepiece and their opposite polarity on the yoke whereby three poles are presented at the working face, two similar poles at the two pole faces and an opposite pole at the third pole face. As shown there may be two such assemblies providing a total of five pole faces, or the number may be increased to extend around 360 degrees. The magnets may be oriented, and of either a ceramic such as barium or strontium ferrite, or a metal alloy such as Alnico. The assembly section may be arcuate instead of the V-shape shown. The assembly may be used in a magnetic particle separator wherein it is mounted on a stationary shaft 16 and has flowing over or under a surrounding rotating drum a dry or wet feed containing magnetic ores.
