[Class 35] [Also in Group XXXII] An electromagnetic device comprising two members with overlapping polepieces relatively movable to a limited extent, has a polepiece edge of one member inclined to a polepiece edge of the other member, these edges being across the direction of relative movement. In the form shown, an inner member has a central core embraced by an annular coil, over the periphery of which extend polepieces 5, 7 magnetically connected to the two core ends and co-operating with diamond-shaped polepieces 13 on an annular outer member. As there is a strong tendency for the two members to take up position wherein overlap is a maximum, the device can be used as a spring, or, alternatively, if one member is on a shaft subject to torsional vibrations and the other member is freely mounted with respect thereto, the device reduces the vibrations. A permanent magnet may provide the excitation.
