Abstract

1297409 Eddy current couplings NERVUSPARIS and F J BALAGNY 5 Nov 1970 [30 Dec 1969] 52729/70 Heading H2A In an eddy. current coupling comprising rotatably coaxially mounted driven and driving rotor shafts 2, 1 respectively connected to a magnetic field generator and a hollow cylinder 3 in which, during operation, eddy currents are generated by relative rotation of the two shafts, the generator includes a plurality of equiangularly spaced excitation coils 19 equidistant from the shaft rotational axis with which their axes are parallel and which are so interconnected that upon energization all like poles of the coils face the same axial direction. As shown, the cylinder 3 is soldered to the shaft 1 via an annular support plate 4 reinforced by radial ribs 5, and has cooling fins 6 associated with an air flow deflector 7. The coils 19 are on magnetic cores 18 disposed between two annular solid or laminated magnetic members 16, 17'having peripheral field-modulating teeth 22 and soldered to a non-magnetic sleeve 9 soldered to the shaft 2 and supported by bearings 10, 11, axial retention being effected by a cover 12 secured by screws 13 accessible via an aperture 14. The coils are fed with current via a wire 24 and slip rings 25.
