Abstract

959,073. Seals. CRANE PACKING Ltd. May 13, 1963 [June 23, 1962], No. 24252/62. Heading F2B. A seal between a movable shaft 2 and its housing 1 comprises a ring of magnetic fluid held by magnetic forces in an axial gap 6 between annular polepieces 4, 5 surrounding the shaft and mounted to float radially with respect to the housing to thereby permit lateral movement of the shaft. The polepieces abut opposite faces of a ring 3 sealed to the housing and pins 9 and screws 11 on the ring engage clearance holes in the pieces 4 and 5 respectively to allow limited radial movement between the parts. The magnetic field is generated by an electromagnet winding 7 on a former 8. Alternatively, it could be provided by a permanent magnet. The polepieces 4 and 5 respectively are pressed against the ring 3 by the pressure of the sealed fluid and by springs 11. Cooling fluid is circulated through the seal via connections 12.
