Abstract
729,327. Stuffing-box substitutes. WER NERT, K. June 13, 1952, No. 14985/52 Class 122 (5). A rotary shaft, such as a pump shaft 1, is sealed by a stationary member urged into sealing face contact with a member rotating with the shaft by a rubber tube 5 enclosed in a chamber 6 to which the pressure medium to be sealed is supplied from an intermediate pressure chamber 10, via a passage 7, to act as a coolant and to supplement the contact pressure on the sealing faces due to the resilience of the tube 5, the medium escaping from the chamber 6 to a low-pressure chamber 11 through a throttling slot 8. The rubber tube 5, partly of bulbous form, is secured at one end 5a to the pump body 2 and carries at each end packing rings 4 of rigid material contacting packing rings 3 secured to the shaft. Cooling medium is supplied to the sealing faces of the rings 3 and 4 through bores 12.
