Class 122(5) [Also in Group VIII] In a rubbing-collar type seal for a shaft 3 a ring member having a plane annular contact surface consisting of a metallic matrix 2 in which a plastic having anti-friction properties is incorporated cooperates with a ring member 4 having a relatively narrow annular mating surface 7. The matrix 2 of porous metal, such as porous bronze, has a plastic, such as poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene, incorporated therein and is urged, as by a spring or other resilient means, into sealing contact with the surface 7 of member 4 of nitrided steel. In a modification member 4 is formed with two concentric sealing surfaces having an annular space therebetween supplied with neutral fluid to ensure separation of fluids on opposite sides of the seat liable to combine or react chemically.
