Abstract

692,374. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING CO. Jan. 2, 1951 [Jan. 13, 1950], No. 186/51. Class 122(v) A seal for relatively rotatable elements in contact with a gritty liquid comprises a washer 21 drivingly connected to one of the elements and urged into contact with a flat radial surface on the other element, the contacting face of the washer comprising at least a pair of flat annular radially spaced surfaces 25, 26 separated by a groove 27 and the washer having an axial recess engaged by a lug on the other element. The washer 21 is urged into contact with a radial face 14 of an impeller 13 by a spring 22 compressed between the flanges of a flexible sleeve 17 of elastic material such as rubber that seals the washer to a supporting metal retainer 16 which is press fitted in a housing 10 and has a lug 23 that engages an axial recess 24 in the washer to thereby relieve the sleeve from friction torque. The surface 26 is stated to act as a filter for the surface 25.
