Abstract
827,279. Stuffing-box substitutes. LEISTIKOW, F. W. R. (International Packings Corporation). Aug. 19, 1958, No. 26644/58. Class 122 (5). An oil seal 5, Figs. 1 and 4, between a shaft 8 and a bearing housing 2 comprises an annular sheet metal cup 7 and a flexible rubber sealing element 32 vulcanized thereto, the cup including a flange 26 and a rim 22 having a flared lip 24 which, when the seal is assembled, is adapted to spring into a groove 12 in the housing thereby ensuring the destruction of the seal when it is removed. The seal is provided with a sealing lip 34 for engagement with the shaft and, as shown, two identical seals are located in the housing bore on either side of a bearing 6. The diameter of the rim 22 is arranged to be a pressfit in the bearing bore portion 16 and the diameter of the flared lip 24 is such that, upon insertion of the seal into the bore, it is compressed by the outer bore portion 14 until, when the flange 26 abuts the bearing 6, the lip springs into the groove 12.
