Abstract
715,298. Universal joints. BELLOMO, A. July 29, 1952 [Aug. 1, 1951], No. 19145/52. Class 80 (2) A cover for a universal joint comprises two hemispherical end caps 2, 3 urged by a spring or springs 4 into engagement with a tubular member 7, sealing rings being provided between the tubular member and the caps and between the caps .and the joint parts Bearing rings 11 of synthetic resin. rubber or bronze are shaped to fit the surface of the caps 2, 3 and are positioned by sheet metal rings 12. One ring 12 may be integral with or fixed to the member 7 and the other ring may be retained therein by split pins, pieces of wire or the like 15. Sealing rings 13 of felt or rubber are held in place by rings 14 of sheet metal. Further rings 17 seal the gaps between the joint parts and the end caps. A single spring or, as shown, a plurality of springs act between a joint part 21 and a ring 19 fixed to the cap 3 to maintain a pressure at the seals. The joint part 21 is splined to the shaft 26 and adjustably positioned thereon by a split or resilient ring 23 engaging one of a number of grooves 33 in the shaft and a ring 22 screwed to the member 21 and locked by a tab 24. A ring 28. engaging right and lefthanded threads on the hub 38 and a ring 29 both of which are splined to the shaft, locks the hub 38 to the shaft against a resilient washer 32 and acts through rings 34, 35 to lock the inner race of a bearing 27 to the shaft. A ring 30 engaging a groove in the shaft provides an abutment for the ring 29.
