Abstract

785,665. Stuffing-box substitutes. GITS BROS. MFG. CO. Dec. 7, 1955 [Nov. 1, 1955], No. 35126/55. Class 122 (5). Sealing means between two relatively rotatable elements, such as a shaft 13 and a wall 12 through which it passes, comprises a seal ring 18 supported by a sleeve 27 and axially clamped to a diaphragm 19 of resilient material by means, such as a radial flange 28 and a washer 29, carried by the sleeve and including an annular edge 20 that bitingly engages the diaphragm. The washer 29, of dished form, is locked on the sleeve 27 with its edge 30 biting into the diaphragm by expanding the end of the sleeve with a tapered tool. The diaphragm has an irner sleeve portion 33 interposed between the sleeve 27 and the ring 18 and an outer sleeve portion 21 compressed between a rigid band 22 and a shell 11 secured to the wall 12. The sealing ring 18 is preferably of lubricating material, such as carbon, and is urged by a spiral spring 20, compressed between the band 22 and the washer 29, into facial sealing contact with a disc 14 fixed to the shaft 13. Relative rotation between the ring 18, the diaphragm and the sleeve 27 is prevented by indentations 32 on the flange 28 and radial projections (not shown) on the sleeve portion 23 engaging corresponding recesses in the ring. To relieve the diaphragm from torque, the ends of the spring 20 are bent to extend into openings (not shown) in the flange 31 of band 22 and in the washer 29. In a modification, the shell 11 is omitted and the sleeve portion 21 fits directly in a bore in the wall 12.
