Abstract
1413029 Rotary shaft seals GROLL LEONETTI & CIE SA 20 Sept 1973 44257/73 Heading F2B A rotary shaft 1 is sealed where it extends through a wall 2 by means comprising a casing 3, a split ring 4 closely surrounding the shaft, an unsplit ring 5 surrounding the shaft with clearance and urged radially by resilient means 18 to contact the shafts in the axial zone C of the slit 11 in the split ring, means preventing rotation of the rings 4, 5 in the casing, end resilient means 19 urging the rings axially against each other and the unsplit ring against a shoulder 9 on the casing. The ring 4, which may be of carbon, has a radial dimension that increases, preferably continuously, on each side of the slits 11 to the diametrically opposed zone so that when the slit is opened, due to thermal expansion of the shaft, the bore 10 remains cylindrical. The initial diameter of the bore may be less than, equal to or even greater than the shaft diameter. Lugs 12 and 16 on the casing engage notches 13 and 17 in the rings 4 and 5 respectively. The spring washer 19 is located by a spring ring 20. The split ring may be formed from two materials, e.g. carbon loaded with P.T.F.E. and a metal alloy and the cylindricity of the bore 10 may be maintained during shaft expansion by the use of two materials, by slits in the outer periphery of the ring or by removal of material.
