[Class 122(v)] In a seal between relatively rotatable elements 10, 14 a sealing washer 22 has an inward radial flange 90 and an axial flange 34, a retainer 27 for the washer 22 has a cylindrical wall movable relative to the washer 22 and carrying a radial section 26 to form an abutment for spring means 25 urging the washer 22 from the abutment, a resilient ring 33 is sealingly compressed between the washer 22 and retainer 27 in an annular space therebetween which is terminated at one end by a radial flange on the retainer 27, and means is provided to prevent relative rotation between the washer 22 and the retainer 27. In one embodiment the retainer 27 is provided with a recess in which is compressed packing 30 to provide a driving connection between the retainer 27 and a shaft 10, and between the section 26 which extends outwardly and an outward radial flange 24 on the washer 22 spaced from the end of the washer 22 adjacent the section 26 is compressed a spring 25 encircling the washer 22. The ring 33 of rubber &c. is of circular cross-section and is confined in the annular space which allows axial rolling of the ring 33. Lugs on the retainer 27 enter slots in the periphery of the flange 90 to form a driving connection. A further embodiment has a retainer with cylindrical inner and outer walls connected by the radial section, the axial flange being within the space defined by the walls and itself defining two annular spaces, the resilient ring being in one space and a single helical spring encircling the inner cylindrical wall in the other space. Other embodiments employ series of short helical springs and are adapted to be fitted on either element with or without the use of packing.
