599,565. Stuffing-box substitutes. SCHWITZER-CUMMINS CO. Sept. 18, 1945, No. 24118. Convention date, May 10. [Class 122 (v)] A fluid sealing unit for shafts &c. comprises an annular cuplike retainer for centring and supporting the unit in sealing position, the retainer being formed with a cylindrical spacing and supporting wall 22 terminating in an outwardly extending flanged rim 21, an annular flexible sealing disc 19 secured about its periphery to said flanged rim and arranged to extend inwardly of the retainer to provide a flexible diaphragm terminating in an inner annular flanged portion 20, and a rigid sealing washer 18 secured to the inner flanged portion of the sealing disc on the opposite side thereof from the cup-like retainer, whereby the sealing washer and retainer will be permanently joined by the sealing disc as a unit while permitting limited axial displacement therebetween. A spring 25 may be fitted between the retainer 22 and the sealing disc 19.
