Abstract
774,221. Stuffing-box substitutes. HENSCHEL & SOHN GES. Nov. 19, 1954, No. 33622/54. Class 122 (5). An oil seal for a rotating shaft 11, particularly for a motor vehicle gear-box or rear axle, comprises an oil deflector disc 1 mounted on and rotating with the shaft and a stationary sealing ring 2 in rubbing contact with the disc and grooved on its outer periphery to form an oilcollecting channel 5. The ring 2 is urged into contact with the disc by a rubber bellows 3 vulcanized at one end to the ring and secured at its other end 7 to the shaft housing 6. Oil collected in the channel 5 is drained through a passage 13. In a modification, Fig. 2, the ring 2 and bellows 3 are housed in a U-section metal ring 4 which is inserted in a bore in the shaft housing and driven in by an annular punch 15, placed over the inner arm of the ring 4, until the inner arm abuts the disc from which it subsequently moves back slightly due to the springiness of the ring 4; rubber buffers 14 may be fitted on the inner arm. In another modification, the bellows 3 abuts the inner arm of the ring 4, the sealing-ring 2 is urged against the disc by a number of springs compressed between the rings 2 and 4, and the packing is inserted in the housing bore by an annular punch having a shoulder which abuts the ring 4.
