Abstract

776,205. Stuffing-box substitutes. MONO PUMPS, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1956 [Feb. 28, 1955], No. 5919/55. Class 122 (5). A shaft seal particularly for a pump comprises a hollow annular resilient member and a sealing ring located by a flange or flanges on the resilient member and abutting a wall thereof whereby when fluid pressure is supplied to the interior of the resilient member the ring is urged into rubbing sealing contact with the shaft. In one embodiment, Fig. I, for a rotary shaft 1, a hollow annular member 6 of resilient material, e.g. rubber, having a U-section portion closed by a ring 17, is mounted on an L-section backing plate 10, bolted therewith to a circular flange 5 on the housing 4 surrounding the shaft opening 2, and carries, by means of an axial flange 7, a sealing ring 12 of metal, carbon or synthetic resin pressed into rubbing contact with a collar 16 on the shaft when fluid pressure is supplied to the member 6 through a valve 18 in the closure ring 17. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, for a rotary or reciprocating shaft 20, a sealing ring 25 of pliable material, e.g. yarn impregnated with graphite, a synthetic resin or preferably with a lubricant such as grease is located between radial flanges 28, 29 on the resilient member 27 and urged resiliently radially into contact with the shaft when fluid pressure is supplied to the member 27. When the seal is used for packing a pump shaft the pressure fluid may be derived from the pump.
