Abstract
744,029. Stuffing-box substitutes. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Nov. 3, 1953 [Feb. 4, 1953], No. 30399/53. Class 122(5) A side-face seal for a rotating shaft 3 comprises a rotating seal ring 8 urged by resilient means, such as a spring 15, into sealing contact with a stationary seal ring 4, and a flexible sleeve 9 having a flange 12, 13 at each end, a portion 10 closely surrounding and held in sealing engagement with the shaft by a collar 18 abutting the flange 12, and a conically flared portion 11 extending between the portion 10 and the flange 13 and supported by a triangular cross-section ferrule 19. The ring 4 is sealed in a recess in the shaft housing by an O- ring 6. The spring 15 is located between a shoulder 16 on the shaft and the end of a shell 14 which presses the sleeve flange 13 againtst the ring 8, has protrusions 20 engaging indentations 21 in the ring 8, and is driven from the shaft by lugs 22 on the collar 18 engaging axial slots 23 in the shell. The rings 4 and 8 are of iron and carbon respectively and the sleeve 9 is preferably of polymerized chloroprene or copolymer of acrylic nitrile and butadiene. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the sleeve 9 encloses the ferrule, and is housed within the shell 14 and a metal disc extends radially between the ring 4 and the shaft housing to act as a heat-dissipating gasket. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the seal is arranged as a unit in a cup-shaped housing 65 in which the parts are retained after insertion therein by a ring 80 secured to the holding flange 79. Lubricating oil is supplied to the sealing contact faces of the rings 67 and 68 through a pipe 81 and returned by a passage 83 in the shaft housing.
