Abstract

1373329 Rotary shaft seals FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 20 Aug 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 39209/73 Heading F2B Sealing means for a rotary shaft 2 where it extends through a housing 1 comprises a resilient sealing member secured at its outer edge to a cup-shaped case 4 press-fitted in the housing and having at its inner edge a sealing lip 5 urged by a spring 6 into contact with a sleeve 7 press-fitted on the shaft, the case 4 having a flange 8 which overlaps the sleeve and has tongues 10 formed by slots 9 whereby, when the seal is being pressed into its operative position, e.g. by a tool 11, Fig. 3, the tongues 10 abut and press the sleeve 7 and when the pressure is released, spring back to be axially spaced from the sleeve. To facilitate insertion of the case in the housing, its free edge may be divided by slots (12, Fig. 4) into tongues (13) bent inwardly. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the flange (8<SP>11</SP>) is formed with centring lugs (14).
