Class 122(5) A shaft seal comprises a sealing ring 5 urged into contact with a conical surface 7 rigid with the shaft 1 by one end of a sleeve 4 that surrounds the shaft and whose other end enters into a housing 3 and has a tapered surface surrounded by a packing ring 10 pressed by the pressure of the sealed liquid into fluid-tight contact with the tapered surface and the housing. the sleeve 4 being urged towards the conical surface 7 by a compression spring 8 mounted in the housing 3. A loose collar 9 is interposed between the ring 10 and the spring 8 and the surface 7 is provided on a sleeve 11 secured to the shaft by a wedge member 12 consisting of a hard metal alternating radially with a relatively soft metal deformed to make a seal between the sleeve and the shafts.
