Abstract

926,216. Stuffing-box substitutes. HOUDAILLE INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 21, 1961, No. 41638/61. Class 122 (5). Sealing means for a rotary shaft 12 comprises an element 18 having a sleeve 22 closely surrounding the shaft with a flange 24 at one end thereof abutting a side wall 44 of a groove 16 in the shaft housing 14 and a rubber &c. ring 20 compressed between the outer tapered surface 32 of the sleeve 22 and the bottom 28 of the groove and deformed by the hydraulic pressure of the liquid to be sealed so that it urges the element 18 into contact with both the shaft and the wall 44. The element 18 has an axial dimension less than that of the groove and the outer diameter of the flange 24 is less than that of the bottom 28 of the groove. The element 18 is of polytetrafluoroethylene.
