Abstract
805,453. Shaft seals. JABSCO PUMP CO. July 26, 1956 [Aug. 22, 1955], No. 23178/56. Class 122 (5). To prevent shaft wear the sealing element 50 of a rotary shaft seal 48 bears on a replaceable wear sleeve 42 slidably mounted on the shaft 24 and driven thereby through a splined portion 44 of the sleeve engaging the splined end portion 28 of the shaft. As shown, the invention is applied to the shaft of a. pump for handling abrasive liquids and having a rubber impeller 30 splined to the shaft end 28. The sealing element 50 is urged into contact with the sleeve 42 by a garter spring 52 and housed in a retainer 54 surrounded by a rubber annulus 56 pressed into a bore 22 in the pump casing. Abrasive material is excluded from the seal and the splined shaft end 28 respectively by a rubber washer 58 and a flexible lip 60 integral with the impeller 30, both engaging the sleeve. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the seal 48 is replaced by a stuffing-box gland packed by packing rings and including a lantern ring through which lubricant may be introduced.
