596,205. Shaft seals. JONES, W. D. Feb. 28, 1946, No. 20823/45. [Class 122 (v)] In a shaft seal in which a sealing ring 4, mounted on a rotating shaft 3, is resiliently pressed against a fixed bearing surface on a stationary housing 2, the inner edge of the stationary member 2 is formed with recesses 2b, permitting fluid to pass from the shaft surface to lubricate the sealing surfaces. Similar recesses on the outer edge facilitate distribution of the fluid.
