Abstract
693,222. Oil seals. WHITTLE, C. H. April 14, 1950. [July 9, 1949; July 9, 1949; Aug. 5, 1949], No. 9210/50. Class 122(v) A bearing seal comprises a single resilient-steel disc urged to bear obliquely with one peripheral edge only against a sealing surface. A stationary conical steel disc 27 is secured by a support ring 28 to a shaft housing 21 and bears with its free outer peripheral edge against a rotating steel disc 25 clamped through shaft packing 36 to a distance ring 26 contacting an inner ball race 23. The rotating disc 25 may have its bearing surface covered with a wear-resistant and heat conducting material such as brass, graphite or carbon and the bearing pressure between the discs may be adjusted by varying the thickness of the distance ring 26. The support ring 28 may be held on the inner or outer periphery of the outer ball race 22. In a modification a rotating disc only is provided which bears with its outer peripheral edge against the bore of the outer ball race.
