Abstract

616,961. Stuffing-boxes. LAUG, D. Sept. 26, 1946, No. 28736. [Class 122 (v)] A stuffing-box adapted to make limited angular and lateral movements relative to a cylinder, comprises a split housing 2, through which passes a shaft 1, bolted together by bolts 3 and having a peripheral flange with a convex surface 5, the flange being embraced by a chambered collar 7, secured to the cylinder, the chamber containing a ring 6 having a concave surface in contact with the surface 5, the chamber being of greater diameter than the ring 6 and of greater longitudinal depth than the flange. The collar 7 and ring 6 are split and bolted together. The casing 2 has shaft bearing surfaces 13, 14 and labyrinth passages 8 in two groups 8, 8 separated by a recess 9 which collects condensate which then passes out through the openings 10, 11, 12 in the casing, ring and flange.
