Abstract

704,117. Stuffing-box substitutes ; piston packing. WALKER & CO., Ltd., J. Sept. 19, 1951, No. 21964/51. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5) In a packing comprising a sleeve 2 of wear resistant material closely surrounded by or within a backing ring 1 of natural or synthetic rubber the peripheral surface of the backing ring opposite that contacting the sleeve is shaped so as to render the adjacent material deformable to facilitate fitting the packing in a recess 4 or on a shaft. The recess 4 has an internal diameler less than that of the opposing surface of the backing ring 1 which surface may comprise a single curved surface or be ribbed. The opposing surfaces 3 of the sleeve and the backing ring may be either parallel to the packing axis or tapered thereto and the sleeve may be either separate from or bonded to the backing ring. In a modification the sleeve is in the form of a hat leather. In the case of a stationary piston mounted within a reciprocable cylinder the packing is housed in a groove in the piston.
