Abstract
648,628. Stuffing-box substitutes. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and DUNCAN, T. S. April 13, 1948, No. 10233. [Class 122(v)] In a fluid-pressure gland for sealing the end of a cylinder 10 about the surface of the piston rod 12 working therein, a sealing element 15 encircles the piston rod and is housed in a differential piston 16 in the base of the cylinder, the piston 16 being subject to the cylinder working pressure on one face 161 whose superficial area exceeds that of its other face 162 which is in direct physical contact with the sealing element 15 so that an intensified loading is imparted to the sealing element causing the latter automatically to exert a correspondingly increased pressre upon the sealed surfaces. The rubber sealing element 15 is housed within the skirt 18 of the differential piston 15, which is sealed at its periphery by a packing ring 17, and the annular space beneath the skirt 18 is vented to atmosphere through bores 19.
