Abstract
760,310. Packing rings. TANNER, C. L. Jan. 10, 1955, No. 739/55. Classes 122 (1) and 122(5). A sealing ring 5 to prevent fluid leakage between two elements, such as a piston 7 and a cylinder 8, is made of rubber or like resiliently deformable material and has its cross section defined by symmetrically arranged tangentially merging alternate convexly and concavelycurved portions 15 and 16 respectively, the radius of curvature of all the concave portions being equal and the radius of curvature of all the convex portions being equal but less than that of the concave portions. The radius of curvature of the convex portions is not more than half that of the concave portions which latter figure is not less than a third of the major cross sectional thickness X, X of the ring. None of the curved portions 15, 16 subtends an angle greater than 180 degrees. The ring is housed in a groove 6 in the piston 7 and is an interference fit between the bottom 6a of the groove and the cylinder wall. In operation, the ring is pressed and deformed by the fluid pressure into sealing contacts with one side and the bottom of the groove and the cylinder wall.
