Abstract
789,618. Piston and stuffing-box packing. WELLWORTHY, Ltd. July 19, 1956 [July 22, 1955], No. 21272/55. Addition to 744,651. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). In a split or segmental composite sealing-ring comprising a metal ring 1 having a rubber or rubber-like ring 2 bonded to its internal or external periphery, according to whether the ring is to be outwardly or inwardly acting, and shaped or recessed as at 4, so that when the ring is compressed into a ring groove, one or more cavities are formed behind the ring, as disclosed in the parent Specification, means are provided in the ring, such as radial grooves 7 extending across one face or radial bores through the ring, to relieve any pressure built up in the cavity or cavities when the external pressure on the ring is released. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 in which two sealing rings are arranged back-to-back in one groove 5 the pressure relieving grooves 7 are provided only in the ring adjacent the pressure side A of the seal.
