Abstract

826,521. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. A.-P.-D. CO. May 28, 1957 [Jan. 22, 1957], No. 16967/57. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A sealing-ring 30, Fig. 6, of rubber &c. housed in a groove 12 in one of two relativelymovable parts, such as a piston P and cylinder C, has a cross-section comprising a generally rectangular portion 1, 2, 3, 4 having at each corner axially and radially-extending lobes 35- 38, the rectangular portion having an axial dimension greater than, but less than twice, its radial dimension. The ring has axial clearance in the groove 12 whose depth is slightly less than the overall radial thickness of the ring. In a modification, Fig. 10, further lobes 49, 50 are provided in the inner and outer peripheries of the ring 46 intermediate the corner lobes, the axial distance between the centres of lobe 49 or 50 and the centre of either one of the adjacent corner lobes being greater than, but less than twice, the radial dimension of the rectangular portion 5, 6, 7, 8.
