Abstract

821,697. Piston and stuffing-box packing. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. June 27, 1957 [May 31, 1956], No. 16859/56. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] An accumulator has a gas chamber 19 separated from a liquid chamber 20 by a piston assembly 18 which is mounted on a rod 23 extending to the exterior of the accumulator. The piston assembly comprises discs 21, 22 with a flat sealing ring 30 of elastic material therebetween, a chamber 31 being formed between the discs and communicating with the gas chamber through a bore 32. The pressure in the gas chamber is less than that of the liquid chamber due to the rod 23. The discs are arranged on a reduced end of the rod 23 between shoulder 25 and nut 26 and are urged together by the pressures in the chambers 19, 20 compressing ring 30 and thus sealing the chambers. Sealing means for preventing escape of liquid past rod 30 to the outside of the accumulator comprise discs 41, 42 and sealing ring 45 freely mounted in the cavity in the head of the accumulator. Holes 46 are provided in the ring 45 and lower disc 42 and through part of the upper disc 41 and are under atmospheric pressure. Pins 47 with vent holes are preferably provided in the holes 46 to prevent the sealing ring from spreading into the holes.
