[Also in Groups XXIX and XXX] A device 11 to measure load or tension comprises concentric cylinders forming an inner hydraulic fluid chamber 32, in which moves a piston 30 and an annulus divided by a sealed separator ring 36 into a hydraulic fluid storage chamber 35 and a compressible fluid chamber 37. Hydraulic fluid can be delivered from the storage chamber 35 to the chamber 32 via passages 41, 91, 98, 93, 94, 95, 100, 105 turning pump handle 83 along canted slot 87 to move the pump piston 82 to the right in Fig. 5 and compress hydraulic fluid in the passage 95 until the ball 101 is forced off its seat against the action of spring 103. The ball 101 returns to its seating position when the pressures in chambers 32, 35 are equal. When the pump handle is released, the pump piston 82 returns to its original position under the action of spring 88, thus reducing the pressure in the passage 95 and opening ball valve 96 to allow inflow from passages 91 to 94, until the pressure in passage 95 is equal to that in chamber 35. Hydraulic fluid can travel from the chamber 32 to chamber 35 by means of a valve assembly 18 (see Group XXIX) which is operated by a handle 123 in a similar manner to the pump 19. Pressure indicators 21, 22 are provided for the hydraulic and compressible fluid respectively.
