Abstract
591,522. Stuffing - box substitutes. ANGUS & CO., Ltd., G., and PROCTER, A. May 11, 1945, No. 11852. [Class 122 (v)] In an oil seal a having a part of oppositely axially-directed sealing lips b or j resiliently tending to separate and bear each against one of two relatively rotatable radial surfaces k<1>, k<2>, between which the oil seal is otherwise freely interposed, the two radial surfaces are provided by the radial cheeks, of a two-part casing, one part of which has an inner cylindrical sleeve portion l<1> and the other an outer cylindrical portion l<2>. As shown in Fig. 1, the resilient member is of V cross-section, the limbs being spread apart by a coil spring c and the casing comprising two inseparable sheet metal members k<1> and k<2>, with radial fianges m<1> and m<2> overlapping the inwardly rebated margins of cheeks l<1> and l<2>. In a modification, a sheet metal bellows i, Fig. 2, with sealing lips j is interposed between the cheeks of the casing members k<1> and k<2> which are of more substantial metal than in the first form.
