Abstract

724,171. Shaft seals. VOGT, A. May 3, 1950 [May 7, 1949], No. 10929/50. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] The spindle 6 of a hand-actuated valve (see Group XXIX) is sealed by sealing members 10, 11 secured in a recess 8 by a screwthreaded plug 9. Each sealing member comprises an outer cylindrical portion 13 connected at one end to a frusto-conical portion 12 which contacts the valve stem. To assist sealing, the space between the members is filled with hydrocarbons previously degassed by subjection to a high vacuum.
