Abstract
215,885. Oliver, E. L. March 5, 1923. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; packing, non- metallic.-Packing for rotating parts, particularly applicable for turbines and centrifugal pumps, comprises a ring 14, Fig 2, of rubber or other elastic material, which is secured either to the stationary element 2 or to the rotating element 13, and out of contact with the, outer element. The ring is deformed by the fluid pressure and, when secured to the rotary element, by centrifugal force into rubbing contact. Preferably the ring is of dovetail cross-section and is secured in an undercut recess by a metal ring 15. The ring may be of hard rubber and may be perforated radially or axially, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
